Gent is one of the largest port cities in Belgium, since it is connected by the Gent-Terenezen channel with the sea. To date, its population is approximately 226,000 people, and the total area is 156 square kilometers.

The results of archaeological excavations allowed historians to conclude that in the area where Gent is now located, people settled in the Stone Age. The name of the city is most likely from the Latin word “gante” (“pier”). It has not yet been established when the Gent was founded, but it is known for sure that already during the early Middle Ages he was a rather large settlement, and in the period from the 15th to the 15th century he was even the second largest in Europe after Paris. This city was a significant center of cloth production, had tax benefits, but was drawn into a long conflict between France and England, and almost always performed on the side of the latter (largely because it received wool).

In the XVI century, Gent was one of the most important centers of resistance of the Netherlands (in which he then included) Spanish rule. Travelers acquiring inexpensive trips to Belgium and falling into this city, from guides learn that it was there that a peace treaty was signed, according to which the boundaries between the rebellious northern regions of the country and the southern, remained for the time being occupied.

Of course, the wars and armed confrontations could not but affect the economic situation of Genta, and from the second half of the XVI to the beginning of the 19th century the city experienced decline. After the Napoleonic invasion, namely – in 1830 he finally became part of Belgium and began to gradually revive.

It should be noted that Gent from the point of view of tourism is “in the shadow” of another Belgian city – Bruges, but experts believe that it is no less interesting. Among its many architectural attractions, the Cathedral of St. Bavon, built in the 10th century, is particularly distinguished. Outwardly, it is somewhat “heavy”, however, inside this cult structure you can see a magnificent altar, as well as an excellent collection of medieval painting and sculptures.

One of the symbols of Genta is the Bethfruis Tower, located just opposite the Cathedral of St. Bavon. It was erected in the XIV century and represents the construction richly decorated with filigree ornaments, which is part of the UNESCO World Heritage List. Not far from it is another remarkable Baroque structure, which for a long time was used as a prison.

Most travelers traveling to Belgium, during their trips, manage to visit several cities of this country at once.
